CAD data is valuable, but rarely XR-ready.
Engineering models are optimized for precision and manufacturing. XR needs fast real-time rendering, clean hierarchies, suitable materials and manageable loading times.
Geometry should be reduced intentionally.
Hidden internals, threads, fasteners and tiny details can consume performance without adding value. Optimization should preserve the details that matter to the intended task.
Assembly structure determines interaction.
If parts need to be selected, animated, hidden or used in procedural training, object hierarchy and naming need to support those interactions.
CAD materials rarely transfer one-to-one.
Real-time engines use different shader and material systems, so colors, surfaces, transparency and textures often need remapping or optimization.
The output format depends on the pipeline.
FBX, glTF/GLB or engine-specific import workflows may all be appropriate. Scale, coordinate systems, hierarchy, materials and metadata need to remain verifiable.
A data check before development prevents surprises.
Reviewing file size, part count, detail level, materials, variants, metadata and update processes reveals how much of the pipeline can be automated.
